What set Erickson apart was not the surface form of his communication, but the precision with which he entered the existing structure of a person’s experience.
He was not imposing trance from outside the subject but identifying the trance already operating in symptom, expectation, resistance, memory, attention, and unconscious patterning, then using that existing organization as the route through which change could occur.
That is the real departure from any other traditional hypnosis models.
The question is no longer how to hypnotize the person, but what process is already governing their experience, where its leverage point lies, and how to intervene without provoking resistance.
What Makes Ericksonian Hypnosis Different
In ordinary hypnosis, the operator often begins with a method.
In this type of hypnosis, the work begins with the subject’s existing unconscious mind organization.
We’re working solely with the client’s inherent program, to change it by addressing the pivotal points upon which their limitation has stabilized.
That makes this work precise, strategically impactful and effective in the long term.
The work in this model of hypnosis, is not to select a technique, but to identify how this person’s experience is organized, what is maintaining it, and where intervention can enter without resistance.
Resistance, here, is not viewed as simply opposition. It reveals deep unconscious organization. The problem is viewed as a symptom, which is the precise, well organized result of an unconscious process the client has been running recursively, to produce the current state.
Its uniqueness lies in this: the intervention is derived from the subject’s existing trance structure, not superimposed upon it. That is what separates strategic hypnosis masters from practitioners still relying on memorized techniques, scripts, and formulaic processes.
